What I'm Adding to my Wardrobe This Summer

Since the huge closet purge I did last fall when I got the Indyx app I’ve been very intentional about the things I add to my wardrobe each season. My goal isn’t to have a minimal wardrobe but I want to have one that feels functional for me and my lifestyle.

It’s not officially summer yet but the temps here in Texas are definitely giving summer already. It’s the longest season here, I don’t care what the equinoxes and solstices say. We won’t be dressing for fall here until at least mid-October. At least not in the daytime. Because summer lasts half the year here it only makes sense to have an extensive and comprehensive summer wardrobe. While I have my basics mostly covered they’re just that…basics.

Every functional wardrobe has basics that you can pair with other more statement-making pieces. This is what my closet is missing. It’s the details and accessories that make otherwise boring outfits more interesting and exciting to wear.

While my list of things I’m shopping for this summer includes some basics and foundational outfit pieces—there are seven days in the week after all, and we need enough options for what each day could bring—I’m most looking forward to adding more accessories to my collection.

I have a few pieces chosen, wishlisted, and a few I’ve already purchased, but there are still a few categories I need to look at to round out the summer wardrobe of my dreams.

Dresses

White House Black Market • Lovers and Friends • Riot Swim • Y/Project

I’m obsessed with maxi dresses! They’re the perfect mix of alluring without showing too much and look great with many different kinds of shoes. Plus, they’re the perfect thing to just throw on when it’s too hot to think about a whole outfit. I recently bought a different maxi dress from Riot Swim that makes me a believer in the brand!

Sandals

Top to Bottom, Left to Right: Nine West • Donna Karan • Bernardo • Andre Assous • Michael Kors • Andre Assous

I’m seriously lacking options in this department. I have two pairs of black sandals, a brown pair, and an off-white pair. That’s it. No bit of color or fun. Since most of my clothes are neutral-colored, more neutral options of sandals in styles I don’t already have make sense. However, I also want to add some color without tying it into the outfit with another piece.

Gold Bracelet & Statement Jewelry

Top to Bottom, Left to Right: Quince • petit moments • Quince • petit moments • The MET • Quince • petit moments • Quince

I haven’t bought a lot of jewelry even though I know it’s what my wardrobe is lacking. I want to drip in my jewelry like the 80-year-old-women I see on Pinterest. There’s something so chic about them and I want some of that.

Clearly, you can tell where I like to look first. I have other jewelry on my list, but I’ve been putting those behind the paywall for a little faux gate-keeping.

Everyday Handbag

Top to Bottom, Left to Right: Donna Karan • Aldo • JW Pei • JW Pei • Teddy Blake • Rebecca Minkoff

These bags will work in any season, minus the raffia bag. While I do already have a raffia tote bag, it doesn’t work well for anything other than trips to the beach. I’d feel differently about it if it had a crossbody strap or handles large enough to make it a shoulder bag. I keep it for resort visits, but I want something more functional for my day-to-day life.

My handbag collection is pretty basic overall. My go-to black bag has seen better days and I’d generally prefer more options. I can picture outfits with every one of these bags, but I lean toward getting something colorful. I’ll update my black bag eventually.

Linen

Quince (top // bottom) • J. Crew • Madewell

This wouldn’t be a summer wardrobe wishlist without linen. If there is any single category on here that I plan to get multiple pieces from it’s this one. A matching linen set, linen pants and a tank top, or a linen dress are some of the simplest outfits to keep you cool when it’s way too hot to even think about layering. These are nice and breezy.

Secondhand Finds!

Because I want to give myself a fighting chance to grab one of those crop tops, links to secondhand and deeply discounted finds are behind the paywall. One of these items retails for $815 but you can get it for $165 in pristine condition!
